The first step to build your ADU is to know how much you can and are willing to spend. Most projects are funded with a mixture of personal savings and loans. If you're considering a loan, some lenders require an estimate from a licensed contractor before funds are approved (We can help with that!).
Is the ADU for a family member or renters? How many bedrooms and bathrooms would you like? At this step, it's important for the client and contractor to dicuss the design thoroughly and clear up any concerns to avoid delays during the plans submittal or construction phases. This step includes drawing up the architectural, engineering, and Title 24 (energy) plans and typically takes 6-8 weeks.
When the proposed plans are ready, your architect or contractor will take them to your city's building and planning department to get them approved. This process typically takes between 3-5 months.
Once the plans are approved, your general contractor can get to work! The time it takes to complete your project depends heavily on the size, design, and other factors but most ADU projects typically take between 3-6 months.
